WHY THE PRODUCTION OF SEEDLINGS SHOULD BE CONTRACTED IN ADVANCE

When raising fruit orchards, a significant share of funds goes to the purchase of planting material – seedlings.
Fruit orchards are long-term investments, so mistakes made in the beginning can be difficult to correct, especially if the orchard is raised with inadequate planting material. Therefore, the issue of procurement of planting material should be approached seriously.
In our country, there is a wide range of planting material from a large number of producers, so in terms of quality there is quite a variety. The best choice for our fruit growers would be pre-arranged seedling production. In this way, the buyer of planting material can dictate the assortment and quality of the desired seedlings. Depending on the growing conditions and the projected cultivation technology, appropriate seedlings are selected and that choice should be left to professionals.

In our market you can find seedlings from domestic producers, but also imported seedlings. Seedlings are usually annual, but can be two or more perennials.
During long-term manipulation of seedlings, they dry out and injure, so before buying planting material, it is necessary to perform a detailed control of the condition of the root system and buds.
The root of the seedling must be developed, fresh, light in color, with properly spaced veins. The buds must not be damaged, especially not those in the zone of formation of the future crown. Premature branches can be developed on the seedlings, which is desirable if they are located in the zone of the future crown. Overgrown annual seedlings can have blinded buds that make it difficult to form the growing form properly, so such seedlings should be avoided.
A special category of seedlings consists of “knip” seedlings, which are usually with a two-year above-ground part (coil). On such seedlings, it is common to have 5, 7, 10 and even more well-developed premature branches with yield potential that can provide a solid yield in the year of planting. Of course, in order for such planting material to justify its high price and show its advantages, it is necessary to provide the plants with optimal nutrition and irrigation in the first place, but also to possess adequate professional knowledge necessary for proper performance of post-technical operations.
